MoFA

 NEWSLETTER :: WINTER 2009

PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE

We are flying furiously into winter, MoFA Members! But what a Fall!! I hope everyone got an opportunity to come to St. Louis to enjoy Innovations in Textiles 8. We have had great events in the past, but this year just seemed to be wonderful start to finish. MoFA’s exhibit ¡Fibra, Vive! was a big success for us. We had a wonderful reception and the guests' comments were very positive. MoFA was well represented at other gallery events as well. We can be very proud of all who participated.

There are many people to thank and I am afraid I will forget to name all the individuals who have made our Innovation’s experience a success. I would like to mention a few individuals of merit. Thank you then to: Dave Sanders, director of the Old Orchard Gallery and Cori Carr, gallery assistant. Our juror Becky Grass for an outstanding job.

Susan Rabbitt, owner of Lady Bug Beads, 7616 Big Bend, St. Louis, for giving MoFA’s exhibit a huge endorsement in her newsletter. To Carlene Fullerton and Pat Owoc for assisting me in so many ways. I could not do this job without their help. To Judy Coates Perez for such a fun two-day workshop. And to Luanne Rimmel and her team who have put countless hours into the logistics of Innovations in Textiles for many years now. This is a tremendous amount of work with a great deal of responsibility. Brava Ladies! You deserve medals. Thank you to all who have helped to make MoFA’s participation in Innovations such a great experience.

So, after all of that where does that leave us? It leaves us with no time to waste! The deadline for Fiber: TwentyTen is right around the corner, January 26, 2010. This juried exhibition is for all fiber media, 2D and 3D work. An exhibition in St. Charles at the Foundry Art Centre with the MoFA Conference in April 2010 sounds like just the thing to bring in a new year. And then there’s that CHALLENGE! Download the Nest Challenge, the Call for Entry Fiber: TwentyTen and MoFA’s Conference and get ready for a great MoFA Spring. Vice President Bonnie Black is working hard to bring a fantastic Conference together. You don’t want to miss this one.

I am looking forward to seeing each and every one of you in St. Charles in April. Until then, happy holidays everyone. May all your fiber dreams come true in the New Year.

Sincerely,
Judy Cobillas
2008-10 MoFA President

 CLASSES AND WORKSHOPS
January 16, 2010
Experimenting with Shibori Patterns, Discharge and Overdye

Sharon Kilfoyle’s studio, Ashland, MO
10:00am - 5:00pm
CALL 573-657-9004 or 573-999-9247 or email sharon@sharonkilfoyle.com
(Cost: $100)

If you already know some shibori dyeing techniques, this workshop will push your designing skills just a little further. We'll experiment with many different shibori patterns (or you can bring your already-dyed shibori silks and fabrics), then discharge and over dye the existing patterns to create more complex and interesting designs. I hope to focus on arashi overlays, complex fold and clamp experiments, as well as some stitching and free-form patterning, with an emphasis on discharge and over dye. Various dyeing and discharge techniques will be used, and several dyeing and discharge stations will be set up to facilitate free experimentation.

Since this class will be more individualized than a beginning introduction, class size will be limited to 10. Bring your own silks or natural fibers, or buy silks (at near wholesale) available in the studio. All dyes and discharges will be provided.

Creating a Nuno Felt Collage Shawl

Sharon Kilfoyle’s studio, Ashland, MO
10:00am - 5:00pm
CALL 573-657-9004 or 573-999-9247 or email sharon@sharonkilfoyle.com
(Cost: $100)

This workshop approaches the nuno felting process as a collage technique. We'll spend significant time on the design process, which is very much like "painting" with wool and fabric, as well as yarns and other embellishment fibers. Some knowledge of felting is helpful but not necessary for the project. You may choose to bring your own fabrics and merino wools, yarns and embellishments, or silks and wool are available for sale in the studio (near wholesale prices). We can dye or over dye silks as part of the design process. Two yards of silks is more than enough for a project, and two to four ounces of wool would suffice. I emphasize a minimalistic approach to materials to keep the final product sheer and drapable.

Class size is limited to eight so each person has enough design space to make a large shawl. I already have 5 sign-ups, so three openings are available. A wait-list will be created.

Makuk Inspired Pendants

Bearcreek Studio, Columbia, MO
www.bearcreekpaperworks.com

Create pendants inspired by the makuk. A makuk is a traditional Ojibwa basket form made by folding and stitching bark. Using this design as a starting place, we will 1) use patterned paste paper to fold and lace; and 2) texture and oxidize copper sheeting to fold and lace. Create an adjustable neck cord to finish your individualized pair of personal jewels.

 WORKSHOP OPPORTUNITY WITH BOB ADAMS
by Judy Cobillas

I had the wonderful opportunity to take a workshop during Innovations in Textiles 8 with artist Bob Adams, through Craft Alliance in conjunction with their exhibit “Element: The Art of Textile Collage”. This was a two-day workshop that concentrated on free motion stitching, but the sequential instruction served to move us towards thread painting.

If you know Bob Adams’ work, you know he isn’t afraid to try any surface design technique and then stitch like crazy. What I really took away from the workshop was more about using the thread to change the color of the fabric. I also like the way he uses drawing for ideas and stitching motifs.
Bob Adams
Two dayswasn’t enough. I would like to take another workshop with him in the future because he knows how to teach as well as produce great work! Check out his web site www.BobAdamsArt.com.
 MOFA RESOURCES
Video library to be dissolved!
At the last Board meeting, the Video Library and its use were discussed. No one has used it for over a year nor does anyone check the videos when they have been brought to conferences or retreats. It was also mentioned that most people are either going to YouTube for directions or purchasing their own DVDs.

The Board concluded that the Video Library has outlived its usefulness. To dispose of the Library, the Board voted to sell the videos and DVDs for $10 each at the April Conference in St. Charles. Money raised from the sale of the Video Library will go to the Scholarship Fund.
